Special needs provision

For students outside the standard range in any of the following areas – physically, emotionally or academically, then meetings are required with our Special Education Coordinator prior to enrolment to assess how best the school can meet the student’s needs.

Philosophy

Each week, each of our classes has a weekly forum for open ended questioning and discussion.  These are our Philosophy classes which canvas the broad topics of life such as “what is our purpose,” “what is  the meaning of existence”, “how can we live a happy life?”  “what is the nature of vice and virtue?”.

Educational / behavioural differences

Gifted children are very happy at John Colet School.  Our enrolment is comprehensive and our standard curriculum is enriched. There is differentiation within the classroom and extension classes on a needs basis.

Teachers at John Colet School

In the infants classes the same teacher remains with the class and moves with them through the grades until the end of 2nd class.  Students then have another teacher in Primary classes who remains with them from 3rd class to 6th classes.

Rich curriculum

Our cultural program is rich and is based on the finest and the greatest.  For example, every child participates in our annual Shakespeare festivals, our choral singing is demanding but beautifully executed.

Shakespeare

As John Colet School students get older and they are better able to ‘get’ the subtleties of Shakespeare, they are keen to try different and often quite sophisticated treatments of their plays.

For example, this year,   4th class D students are doing “As you Like it” with a “Grease” inspired twist.  They are already rehearsing for several hours each week for their performance at Glen St Theatre at the end of October.

Sanskrit

Sanskrit is taught from Lower First to 6th class, and what a beautiful language it is.  The children develop concentration and the necessary discipline required to memorise the script, the grammar and the vocabulary.
